Of the Earth Jewelry is handcrafted in my small studio in Portland, Oregon. I create each piece using a recycled material known as metal clay. Metal clay is made from particles of pure silver reclaimed from industrial uses such as computer circuit boards and photographic supplies.

The silver is mixed with an organic binder to form a clay-like consistency. I form each piece using a variety of techniques—texturing, forming, and cutting to achieve the desired design. Once the piece is formed, it is fired in a kiln at 1200-1600° and the binder in the clay burns away. The remaining piece is 99.9% pure silver, often called “fine silver”. (By comparison, sterling silver is 92.5% silver.) I polish the piece and apply a patina to bring out the design.

Metal clay lends itself to capturing the organic forms and textures found in the natural world. I love wearable designs that tell a story, and create each piece to reflect the beauty and mystery of nature.

I often make a series of similar designs, but no two pieces are exactly alike.
